The PDF Filters allow Cumulus¬ to catalog PDF ╥Portable Document Format╙ files defined by Adobe for the Acrobat¬ products. The filter called ╥PDF (TEXT) Filter╙ catalogs documents of the file type ╥TEXT╙ created by Acrobat 1.0. The filter called ╥PDF 2.0 Filter╙ catalogs documents created by Acrobat 2.0 up to Acrobat 3.0. These documents have the file type ╥PDF ╙ (note the space character at the end).
In order to create a thumbnail from a PDF file that contains JPEG compressed thumbnails the filter requires that QuickTime be installed.
The Filter Setup Dialog
Both PDF Filters also support adding text from the PDF document to the Notes field of the Cumulus record where it can be searched. The text can be extracted from the PDF document by using Acrobat Exchange or by the filter itself.
Because the filter itself does not support all PDF text operations some words of the extracted text may be divided into two or more parts. Using Acrobat Exchange leads to better results but requires Acrobat Exchange 2.1 or later on your harddisk and is much slower.
If you use Acrobat Exchange to extract the text the clipboard is used for an intermediate storage of the text for each page. Only the front application has access to the clipboard. Therefore the front application has to switch between Exchange and Cumulus for each page the text is extracted from. Further it is not possible to catalog in the background.

Use Acrobat Exchange
to extract text:
(Default: OFF) This option is only active if the "Add Text to the Notes Field" option is activated. To add text from the PDF document to the Notes field when cataloging activate first the "Add Text to the Notes Field" option. If you want to use Acrobat Exchange to extract the text check the "Use Acrobat Exchange to extract text" option. If an error occurs while Acrobat Exchange extracts the text the filter will use its own text extraction.
for Preview:
(Default: ON) Activate this option if you want Acrobat Exchange to do the preview for Cumulus. If this option is not checked or Acrobat Exchange is not available the preview is an enlargement of the thumbnail.
Quit Acrobat Exchange
You can choose between having the filter never quit Acrobat Exchange, leaving the application running after cataloging until you quit it manually, or having it quit Acrobat Exchange whenever the filter launched it to catalog images. Note that the filter in no event quits Acrobat Exchange if it didn╒t launch it itself. If you catalog several PDF Files at once and use Acrobat Exchange to extract the text it is recommended to have the filter never quit Acrobat Exchange.
Text Extraction
Add Text to the Notes Field:
(Default: OFF) Activate this option to add text from the PDF document to the Notes field of the Cumulus record when cataloging. With the "Use Acrobat Exchange to extract text" option you can choose wether Acrobat Exchange or the filter itself extracts the text. In any case the text is sorted by size with the largest text at the top of the Notes field. You can limit the number of characters added by entering a maximum size in the field below.
Max. Characters:
(Default: 1000) If adding text to the Notes field the filter limits the number of characters to add to keep the database smaller. Because the text is sorted by size the most important text will be visible. You can enter numbers between 0 and 32000 here.
The type-specific information window
The following type-specific information is available for PDF documents:

Pages: The total number of pages in the PDF document.
Creator: The name of the person who created the document (if available).
Author: The name of the author of the document (if available).
Producer: The software that created the document (e.g. ╥PDF Writer╙).
